With CBD gaining in popularity

With CBD gaining in popularity, people now seem to be mixing it with everything, including alcohol. The Los Angeles bar scene has a slew of CBD cocktail shows, and breweries sell beers that contain CBD. But is mixing CBD and alcohol really a good idea?

For those of you who don't know, CBD is a marijuana compound that has relaxing effects, but it's not as psychoactive as THC is, so it won't make you high. It is sold as an oil, in capsules, vaporizers, and, apparently, in alcohol as well.

Even if you don't incorporate it into a drink, says James Giordano, professor of neuroscience and biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center, CBD and alcohol can react if you drink them four to eight hours apart. This means that if you take a drink with dinner and then take some cannabidiol before bed, the CBD might have a stronger effect than without the alcohol.

Since alcohol and CBD relax you and lower your inhibitions, these effects can be particularly powerful and long-lasting when both substances are mixed. "By taking CBD, you will feel relaxed, happy, and kind. The alcohol will increase these effects," says Giordano. "It makes some people very, very numb." For this reason, this combination is not recommended.

"As in any other case, the higher the dose of one or both of them, the greater the problem you will face," he explains. "The more you drink, the more CBD you consume, and the effect of both increases and is greater than it would be if you were to consume them on your own. The level of toxicity would be greater: increased loss of control, inhibition, and coordination, and all of this becomes a problem."

However, what effect this combination will have on you depends on the type of sugar you are in. "If you're a happy drunk, CBD can make you happier," says Giordano. "If you are an angry or violent drunk, CBD can definitely prevent some of that."

But in reality, there could be benefits to taking CBD with alcohol, suggests Soyuna Ravatja, MD, MD, MD. A study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that people who consumed alcohol and a CBD capsule had lower blood alcohol levels than those who drank only alcohol, despite suffering from the same disorders of cognitive and motor coordination. Another study in pharmacology, biochemistry, and behavior found that rodents experience less alcohol-related neurodegeneration if given CBD via a topical gel while consuming alcohol.

In another study of free radical biology and medicine, it was found that rodents who consumed CBD 30 minutes before consuming alcohol were less likely to experience oxidative damage to the liver due to alcohol than those that did not consume CBD. While these are only animal studies, experts think they are quite revealing. "Alcohol slows down the autophagy [breaking down of damaged cells] in the liver, which causes the accumulation of fats in the liver, which causes fatty liver, inflammation and hepatitis," Raftja explains. CBD does the opposite, stimulating damaged cells to degenerate, which can counteract the effects of alcohol.

On the other hand, Jordan Schler, chair of the InhaleMD Medical Cannabis Clinic and Association of Hemp Specialists, says there isn't enough research to prove the interaction between alcohol and CBD. He is more concerned about people mixing alcohol with THC; This, he says, doubles THC levels in the blood by eight.

So discussion about the effects of combining alcohol with CBD is nowhere near, and experts don't seem to agree. If you're going to combine CBD with alcohol, Giordano recommends that you keep at least the doses low and try them separately first so you know how you react to it. “For people who don't drink or consume CBD regularly, if you drink and consume CBD together, I wish you good luck as the result will be unpredictable,” he says. "If there is any possible expectation, it is that this person is going to be very drugged."
